One of the best ways to understand motivation is through Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

In 1943 Abraham Maslow penned a paper that defined a series of needs. These needs summarize our motivation: from the basic (food, clothing, shelter) to abstract (love, belonging, self-esteem) all the way up to self-actualization.

Today, I’m going to examine the needs in terms of your job or job opportunity. We’ll look at the needs and see how a job meets that need and, finally I’m going to share six questions that will help you think about your job in terms of helping you achieve self-actualization.

Decide your Future

AgencyWhen I was working at MediaComplete, I was an employee. It sometimes felt like I didn’t have any control over my choices or my future.

Today, I do. I am still an employee but I decide my future.

Determining your future starts (and ends) with one simple truth:

No matter where you work, what you do, or where you are: you can choose.

We call the capacity to make choices agency. Everyone has it. Not everyone recognizes that they do. You begin to decide your future when you begin recognizing that you have agency, even when it feels like you don’t.
